Clissold Cup 2003

7-aside Tournament. 31st August 2003 Clissold Park, Stoke Newington, London.

As we reached the end of Summer, the sun done us a favour and came out to play, as 8 teams battled it out desperate to get their hands on some silverware.... (Well, goldwear really..... with black ribbons!)  From South London came Dynamo Semtex hoping to improve on their drug de-hanced performance in the Mayday Cup, and Poodle Chaos. Would they be the mutt's nuts, or would they go out early on with a whimper? North London was well represented by the other 6 teams. The Rowdies - pirates of the football field, eternal also rans - Sons Of Emil, new comers - The Bradbury Massive Internationale, (cue 'We are Family'), Hackney's Hardest, (the future is orange!), young guns, Chelsea's Most Elite who were cobbled together quicker than you can say 'Abramovich', and purveyors of silky latino skills, The International Bastards.

Two groups of four saw The International Bastards, Hackney's Hardest, Bradbury Massive Internationale, and Chelsea's Most Elite coming first and second in their groups and through to the Semis. Both Semis went to penalty shoot outs, with Hackney's Hardest and Chelsea's Most Elite keeping their nerve and going through to the Final.

The final was a hard fought affair, with the youngsters of the Chelsea mob firm favourites to be basking in the glory at the end of the twenty minute game. However, Hackney weren't going to sit back and take the Chelsea onslought. After going 2-1 down with literally seconds remaining, they won a corner. Up steps super Salvatore to whip one in, and GOOOOOOOOOOAL! Through the legs of what looked like both teams in an overcrowded penalty area, and through the goalie's hands, they had equalised. With many a knackered pair of legs, battered and bruised, and dying for a beer it would all go down to penalties.

Oh what drama..... With cries of 'Of my god, my dad's gonna take a penalty and miss', up stepped the two teams, hoping that they wouldn't be going home feeling all Gareth Southgate. With 53 year old Steve Jones fantastically acrobatic in the Hackney goal, (this man has had more injuries than Evil Knievel!), and saving three of the 5 penalties, it was down to sudden death and sudden humiliation! Chelsea's most Elite missed, and when Marcus du Sautoy stepped up to take what would be the winner, the tension was unbearable, but with a cool (mathematician's) head, he whacked the ball home and it was all over - Hackney's Hardest were this year's champions.

A big thanks to all the teams that took part, and everyone who came and showed their support. Click here for photos
